Hello, Jay!

Indeed, cloning an issue will result in a link between the two issues (clone and cloned issue). However, you can modify this behavior by configuring the jira-config.properties file.

You will not need to add code to JIRA, you will only set the property jira.clone.linktype.name of the file I mentioned. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Stop JIRA.
  2. Go to your <JIRA home> directory.
  3. Find the jira-config.properties file (If the file is not present in your <JIRA home> directory, you can create a file and name jira-config.properties).
  4. If you had to create the file just write "jira.clone.linktype.name=" and save it. If during step 3. you were able to locate the file, just find the property "jira.clone.linktype.name" and erase its value leaving only "jira.clone.linktype.name=".
  5.  Restart JIRA.

Besides this option, you can always remove the link between two issues by clicking in the garbage bin icon (if you are a system administrator). Please reply here if you require further assistance, I am happy to help.

Thank for your help

But I want to decide whether it will link

These two issue will be linked after I click the checkbox.

If I don't click the checkbox, them won't be linked.

It's ok for this solution?

Hello Jay!

Whenever you clone an issue, links may be attached to the original issue. Whenever this checkbox you mentioned appears, it is asking you if you want to clone the links of the original issue, to your clone issue.

On the other hand, JIRA may link the original issue and the clone issue. The property on jira-config.properties will determine what is the default behavior when you clone an issue. You can decide a default link (from the ones available on JIRA) between the two issues, or leave it blank and no link will be created between them.

You will not be able to choose whether to link the cloned issue to the original on a case by case basis (other than manually linking them).

Please feel free to reply, if you have any questions or require further assistance.

Kind regards,

Gregory Peres.

Gregory,  is it possible to disable just the 'clone links' checkbox? or specify which links NOT to clone?

Welcome to the community @Silvia G!

If you need more flexibility when cloning links, you can try our Jira cloud app Deep Clone for Jira.

With Deep Clone you are flexible to:

  • Clone issue links
  • Create "is cloned by" issue links between the clone and the original issue.

You can also create presets for standard cloning actions, to avoid cloning mistakes.

If you have questions or feedback about our app, don't hesitate to get in touch with our support.

Workaround:

Go to Settings --> Issues --> Issue linking

Change Link Issue Name from 'Cloners' to any other.

This will automatically break the link between the original and cloned issue since it is using the pre-existing link type name 'Cloners'.
