Hi Patel,

First of all, your hierarchy, Epic > New Feature > Story > Task > Sub-task is not the default hierarchy. Are you using advanced roadmaps to set this? If so, you should be aware that the boards will display in the standard Epic > Story > Sub-task format. You can show the other hierarchy levels in a board but it is not self explanatory and requires you to sort/group them in a way that makes sense to you, they will not automatically show in the hierarchy that you may have created.

If you are using the basic hierarchy meaning Epic > Story > Sub-task then the next step is to check where you are working. If you are working in the backlog then only Story level issues will show, not epic (although it has its own panel for grouping), not sub-task. Sub-Tasks will only be shown in the actual board.

If that has been setup okay then the next step would be to check the filter, and see if they display all the issues that you want and that includes all sub-tasks. If the filter does not add them then they will not show on the board. If you go into the board settings then you can open up the filter and verify that the sub-tasks are indeed included. If they do not show, then change the filters.

Thank you @Krister Broman _Advania_  for your wonderful advice.

To answer your question I am not using roadmap, we are using server based jira. In scrum board I can see task, sub-task in hierarchy but i am hoping to see story - task and sub-task. Is there any way this can be done?

The hierarchy in Jira Software is:

  • Epic
  • Issue
  • Sub-task

You can have different "issue types" at the issue and sub-task levels, and it is not uncommon to see places that have structures like:

  • Epic type:  Epic
  • Issue type:  Story, Bug, Feature, Task
  • Sub-task type:  Sub-task, Technical task, Docs

So, using those three levels of type, could you explain what you are looking for?

Hi Patel,

Not sure exactly what you want to see. Is it a grouping you desire?

Just displaying the issues you mentioned should not be difficult.

If you go into your board settings on the first page ("General") you can scroll down to the Filter Query. View this and if it says something like issuetype = then you have probably limited the issues that are displayed in your board. A bit further up you will see the Saved Filter section and a link to "Edit Filter Query" pressing this link will take you to the filter and you can change it to what you need. Make sure that your tasks and sub-tasks are displayed for them to later on show up in your board.
