I can't see any error messages (pictures are low detail level). How do you notice, that the description does not change?

I can't really help. Can you please provide more details. With which custom field type did this happen? Have you tried to reproduce with a new custom field (create, then alter the description)? You tagged your question with "server" and "jira-software-server". Which version do you use?
