next-gen can't create an epic

Jeanie Schwenk November 7, 2019

This appears to be a chicken and an egg issue.  I have a newly created next-gen project.  I need to create an epic.  And can't.

  • I can see Project settings -> Issue types of Epic, Bug, Story, Task, Subtask

Photo.PNG

  • When I want to "Create Issue" in the backlog, it only gives me three choices:  Bug, Story, Task (see image)

Photo2.PNG

  • I cannot convert the issue to an Epic as there's not an option to choose Epic.

Photo3.PNG

  • In an already created Story, there is an "Add Epic" link which says to "Choose parent issue" and it says "No options"

There's no Epics because I can't create one.  Because I can't create one, there's nothing to pick from so I can't add a story to an Epic because unable to create.

Hello @Jeanie Schwenk  in NG projects the epic must be created from the roadmap section.

Thank you!  That is indeed correct.

I agree this is the answer, but I don't like it. :)

We derive benefits from using epics without wanting to use the roadmap feature. So I have to turn the roadmaps on to create the epic, and then turn it off again. I hope that another method for creating epics will be exposed at some point.

Hi @Jeanie Schwenk

To create an Epic you need to click on the create button (the "+" button on the left-hand navigation bar), selecting your project and the issue type Epic.

Or - you can go to your project, select "Roadmap" and on the left-hand side of the roadmap is an option to "Create Epic" directly on it.

Tried the first.  Can't create something that already exists.

On the Roadmap - that's the answer.  Thank you!

I don't believe this answers the original question.

Is it possible or not to be able to create an epic from the backlog?  I have 'epics panel' turned off which indicates I want them to be available as cards.

There is a knock on effect for this as well e.g. if you are trying to create an EPIC using iOS shortcuts app, it will not let you perform this action. When I change the shortcut to Story, Task or Bug the JIRA shortcut function works perfectly. I'm certain those are related.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

(I do acknowledge you can create an EPIC from the global create button in the middle of the screen)
