userid length issue

I have 2 users that have very similar userids.  One userid has been in the system for a while, petermh.  The new userid i'm trying to set up is peterm.  It won't allow me to set it up.  I can add the username peterm1, but not peterm.  is there a reason why?

What is the error you get when you try to add the new ID?

It says user id is already in use.

So, what do you see when you visit the existing profile for peterm?

it will not allow me to set up userid peterm... says the userid is in use.

when i look at petermh, it looks normal.

No, I asked what you see when you visit the existing profile for peterm, not the other one, or what happens when you create - you've told us that already.
