Roadmaps in Plan section does not update Start date and end date if it is changed in user story

Chetan Khanna May 12, 2025

HI all,

i have roadmap in Jira plans section, where i have listed some items such as user story, i wanted them to align with actual user story start date and end date, for example if i go to user story and update its start date and end date, i am expecting same to happen automatically in roadmaps Plan section. is this possible ?

what i read so far is if we go with system date then it must happen so i am not familiar with what system date or how we can do that, if anyone has insight to this please do share. thanks in advance.

Hi @Chetan Khanna ,

Welcome to the community!

You are correct that - if everything is configured correct and you're looking at the correct view - this should happen.

So let's see if this is the case:

- In advanced roadmaps you can configure the dates that the view looks at here, make sure they match with the dates you are changing.

-  Make sure that you are watching a "live" view. If you are looking at a scenario in advance roadmaps that has had some updates, the dates might not be synching. Check the feature for scenarios here

Let me know if you found what was wrong, otherwise a screenshot might help to be able to debug further.

kr,

Tessa

Thank you Tessa, sharing screenshots for dates, how it looks in roadmap plan section and what is in actual user story. i want them to be same if we update in user story and changes by itself in plan section.plan date.pngScreenshot 2025-05-12 102553.png

  1. Have a look at your Plan settings > Scheduling and make sure that start date is indeed the date used as the start of your timeline. It can also be Target Start Date on data center.
  2. After you update the date in Jira, make sure to refresh your view in Plans. You should not have to update any data there, but it does not load updates automatically.
  3. If you are using multiple scenarios, make sure you are looking at your current scenario
  4. It may help to display the different available date fields in the fields section in your plan (just on the left of the timeline). If you can show start date, target start date, ... and any other date fields there, you will be able to view which one is being used now.

Hi @Chetan Khanna and welcome to the Community!

The start and end dates of a plan align with Start date and Due date in Jira work items. You can change this in a plan's settings on the scheduling tab:

However, I would advise against that if you are also using timeline views in Jira projects to look at the roadmap of a single project there. Jira's basic timeline view uses the same fields and there this is not configurable. So, using different fields in a plan would create inconsistent views of the same work items (unless of course that is something you want to do intentionally).

Hope this helps!

If you are on Data Center (as you indeed tagged your question), forget about what I said about the timeline views, which are a cloud feature. The rest of the story still applies, as also perfectly explained by @Tessa Tuteleers
