Does anyone have an industry standard set of roles and permissions for jira cloud supporting a software development company?

Jira permissions is in three layers:

  1. Global permissions (who can administer Jira, bulk-change, create projects, etc.)
  2. Project roles (the “containers” you assign users to per project)
  3. Permission schemes (the fine-grained “who can do what” within each project)

Hi @Scott Stewart

The suitable set of roles and permissions include: Administrators, Developers, Testers, Product Owners, and Stakeholders.

Below are few links you can go through to refer the standard roles & permissions and how to set them in Jira cloud support :

I hope these answer your questions. 🙂

Thanks,
Anwesha

Hello Anwesha,
I would like to set up Administrators, Users & External Users.  We are a very simple set up here.  What are the steps to set up Permissions and Roles that would fit that goal?  Do you have examples and steps that I can follow?

Hi @Scott Stewart

You can refer the below wikis to get started with :

  1. Create a Dedicated Group:

    • Go to Jira Administration > User Management > Groups.
    • Create a group like external-suppliers or something like that and add your supplier users to this group.
  2. Configure Project Permissions:

    • Navigate to Project Settings > Permissions.
    • Assign the external-suppliers group specific roles with limited permissions, ensuring they only access the intended project.
  3. Restrict Access to Specific Issues/Epics:

    • Use Issue Security Schemes to control visibility at the issue level.
    • Assign appropriate security levels to restrict access as needed.

Thanks,
Anwesha
