Roll up multiple epics for tracking as a unit

In other tools, I have had multiple epics tied to a product where based on the progress of the stories in the epics I could track epic progress and based on epic progress, I could see product progress.

The product may or may not be associated with a release.

I was hoping epic sum-up would do this, but I have not figured out how.

I've tried various approaches in JIRA, but haven't found yet what gives me the visibility and insight that I want. Ideally there would be an entity above epic, like a product, and potentially above even the product. We do this to find out what release a product might fit into in the future long before that release even exists.

What I'm asking may not be clear and let's discuss.

Hi @Glenn Clapp

You can roll up the progress of each Epic and track them as a unit in Agile Docs.

Say each Epic tied to a product has a specific label.

You can create a Quick Filter which refers to each Epic in a product and bring it up in Agile Docs.

Agile Docs will roll up the stories in each Epic to give an Epic progress report, and roll up the Epics in each Product to give a Product progress report.

As an example, I have a product called 3.2 Agile Docs which can be identified by a label on each Epic. Below is the report I can get for it. Notice how the progress of each Epic rolls up to the product level:

I can help you set up the Quick Filters to get started if you have trouble using JQL.

Hope that helps!

Hello Glenn,

I understand that you are looking for an entity in a higher hierarchy level than Epic, so you could check the Epic based on Stories progress and this Higher-level entity based on the Epic Progress. is it correct?

Unfortunately, JIRA does not provide this kind of hierarchy. It only provides three levels: Sub-task - Task/Story - Epic.

That being said, there are some apps or workarounds that you may use to achieve the scenario you want:

1 - You can use the Sum it up! app to properly sum of the estimation from your sub-task in your Stories and sum its total to the Epics, using three levels of hierarchy to display your progress.

2 - You can use Portfolio for JIRA app where you can create new levels of hierarchy, configuring the tracking of your progress how you need:

Let me know if one of the solutions above has worked for you. Feel free to give us more details in case it does not match what you were asking for.
