Hello Harsh!

Welcome to Atlassian world - to you question: Jira Cloud is different from self-hosted solution. Jira cloud is hosted on Atlassian servers, has limited API and lots of other limitations. In exchange, you don't have to care about performance and servers. Plugins are also a bit more limited and if some plugins are for Jira Cloud and for Jira self-hosted they usually offer a bit less functionality in cloud (due to limited API). Here you find what Atlassian do for security in their own cloud.

In oppose, self hosted solution might run on any cloud (even Google cloud, AWS, Azure or in your own datacenter). Self hosted (usually referenced as Jira Server) offers much more in terms of integrations, api and usually also a bit more plugins/bigger functionality with same plugins. But you are in charge of server itself, OS, database, proxy server and all other things around. So you are also in charge of security. Most of the cloud providers offers basic help with security (closing non used ports, automatic upgrades to OS etc.) but still you are the onw who have to care the most.

So to make it clear:

Cloud:

  • you don't want to care about OS, DB, security etc.
  • you have probably smaller team (tens to lower hundreds) and/or don't care about integrations to other systems that much (there is lots of supported integrations through plugins)
  • there is no particular functionality you are missing in cloud and 100% need it

Server:

  • you can take care of whole server yourself (or have somebody to do so, lots Atlassian Partners offers running Jira Server for you and taking care of it)
  • you have really big team (hundreds - thousands)
  • you are planning lots of integrations or need integration with custom system
  • want to customize Jira alot (in terms of automatizations, look etc.)

There is of course also lots of other little differences and its hard to name them all so feel free to ask on any particular functions you want to know.

I might also suggest reading Atlassian Blogpost: Cloud vs. server.

Have a nic day!
