Single select from group

We are currently using a field that is a select single user from a group. The plugin is not supported in JIRA 4.4.4. Is anyone using this type of field? Is there a work-around?

I created a new useer picker field. This will allow the user to begin typing the manager name and auto complete will show the results. This type of field does not limit the results to a group, but it will work for us.

One of my old clients recompiled it for 4.4, but I can't tell you how much they had to change the code for the new APIs
