Hi,
I did a lot of searching around for the current good practices or the go-to solutions when you need a way to automatically back up your Jira Cloud data from Jira cloud including apps. I'm full aware of the apps that are there that can do periodical Jira backups, but the main issue here are the third party add-ons.
It seems that nobody has still conquered the problem of app data being apart from the Jira Cloud backup. It's clear that such a backup isn't really a backup in the true sense of the word; when you rely on data from eazyBI, Tempo, Xray or some other tool, then you restore your backup and it's not there, it's not really a full restore.
It seems like a very common requirement for many businesses. Some of the apps rely on APIs, some offer manual data backups/restores, but then how would you synchronize the data with your periodic backups? Wouldn't they have different timestamps? Other apps don't offer a restorable backup at all.
So what is the preferred solution to this problem these days? Thanks for sharing your ideas.
P.S.: Again, I'm aware of the apps that do periodical Jira Cloud backups. But they don't back up app data. No need to mention them here again - unless I'm wrong!
Hello @Kamil Beer ,
Welcome to the community !
We understand your requirement and disappointment with the limitation of the feature for Backup on Jira cloud. However to understand why is it not included it is indeed important to consider some facts:
Since the addon data resides on the vendor server, it is necessary to raise a ticket with the vendor support team to check for possibilities of addon data migration from one Jira cloud site to another.
I know the shared information hasn't given you a solution However Goal here us to give insights on What challenge does Jira cloud has to avail of this feature.
Hi @Kamil Beer
Unfortunately there is no good way to backup third party app data.
I am part of Revyz where we help Atlassian customers address multiple use cases including: 1. Automated Backups 2. Granular Restore of data 3. Migration of Configuration from Sandbox to Prod or any site to any other cloud site etc..
I have reached out to some of the popular app vendors including Tempo, XRay etc.. on this topic with no success :-(
As @Himanshi noted, the third party app data is stored in the vendor's cloud and there is no real incentive for them to invest in building API's / mechanisms to help customers or data protection vendors like Revyz to access that data. Unless Atlassian incentivizes them to do so or develops a standard that every app has to adhere too.
Not the answer I like, but thats what it is.
Thanks
Vish

Hello,
thanks for letting me know. So what is the good practice when you have a regulatory requirement that let's say needs to you to keep an automated backup of your whole Jira instance incuding the app data and customizations?
Is there one - or is it simply that this requirement cannot be met?

Hi Kamil,
In my opinion at this point time of having a complete backup including app data cannot be met.
Given where we are, best practice would be to atleast backup your Jira / Confluence data including any customizations.
I am happy to work with you to engage some of the key app vendors to create a backup for the app data.
I have tried to engage Tempo and others with no success, but that effort was as a backup app vendor, perhaps if a customer perspective is present, may be their stance may change.
Thank you
Vish

Hi @Vish Reddy {Revyz}
Xray is probably the most popular test management tool on Jira, and the data footprint it has on their servers is wide and critical to the organisation that uses them.
IMO they do have an api that would allow you to integrate with them. Can you speak on any efforts in this direction?
Thanks,
Rina
