Sorry, we are unable to automatically upgrade jira

Hi,

We are on version 6.1.6 and are trying to upgrade to the latest version and when i run the installer and select upgrade I see the following error, Sorry, we are unable to automatically upgrade your jira software installation as its platform version 6.1.6 and not 7.0 (or later).

Do i need to upgrade to a older version of jira first and then the latest, if so which one ?
