When I close a sprint and begin a New Sprint, the sprint number does not advance and I have to update it manually.  This begin when we moved to cloud. What is the solution?

1. Check Board Settings

Ensure that your board settings are configured correctly:

  • Navigate to Board Settings:

    • Go to your board.
    • Click on the three dots (more options) in the top right corner.
    • Select Board settings.
  • Check Sprint Field Configuration:

    • Ensure that the field used for sprint numbers is correctly configured. If you have a custom field or a specific naming convention, verify that it aligns with your sprint management practices.

2. Verify Automation Rules

If you have automation rules set up for sprint creation or closing, ensure they are working correctly:

  • Go to Project Settings:

    • Navigate to Project settings > Automation.
  • Check Existing Rules:

    • Look for any rules related to sprint creation or number updates.
    • Ensure they are configured to advance the sprint number or handle sprint transitions properly.

3. Update Sprint Manually

While not ideal, manually updating the sprint number can be a temporary solution:

  • Close the Current Sprint:

    • Go to the Active sprints view on your board.
    • Close the sprint.
  • Start a New Sprint:

    • Click Create Sprint to start a new one.
    • Manually update the sprint number to ensure it advances as expected.

4. Check for Known Issues

Sometimes, issues like this can be related to known bugs or changes in Jira Cloud:

  • Visit Atlassian Community:

    • Search for similar issues on the Atlassian Community.
    • Look for any announcements or updates regarding sprint number issues.
  • Contact Atlassian Support:

    • If the problem persists and you can't find a solution, contact Atlassian Support for assistance.

5. Consider Using Custom Fields

If automatic sprint number advancement is crucial, consider using a custom field for sprint numbers and manage it through automation:

  • Create a Custom Field:

    • Go to Jira settings > Issues > Custom fields.
    • Create a custom field for sprint numbers.
  • Configure Automation:

    • Set up automation rules to increment the custom field value when a new sprint is created.
