Timeline vs Backlog

Could someone advise why issues created would show up in the timeline view but not the backlog. I'd prefer to see them in both places.

I am quite new to Jira.

Thanks for the quick response Francis. I have since learned that Epics are not shown in the backlog. Question answered!
