I want to have a list view of all my issues, and further group them by status. I dont want to design a dashboard but want to achieve a matrix view within the issue navigator where the tickets are grouped on the basis of fields like status or assignee etc.
I wanted to mention JIRA work management. Does this hold true for that too. Any other possible solution. To make the issue navigator more user friendly.
Yes it still true for JWM, maybe you can find some plugin in the marketplace that suit your requirement.

This is not possible to group issue based on a field in the issue navigator.

You need to understand issue navigator is used to filter out the issues based on JQL
Group by functionality is not possible in Jira Software or JWM.
In JQL you can create filter for each statuses
What you are looking for is in report format is achieve only by Report/Gadget

It would be a lovely function to add to the issue navigator, and some other places too!

this feature is available out of the box in JXL for Jira.
JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allow viewing and inline-editing all your issue fields, and even grouping your issues by these fields.
Here's how grouping by status looks in action:
JXL is based on JQL and works with any project type. It adds another entry to your project sidebar, so it can work as a great addition to the native issue search. It's also worth noting that you can configure much more sophisticated issue structures in JXL, e.g. you could group first by status, then by assignee, etc.
More info at https://jxl.app. Disclaimer: I work on JXL :))
Hope this helps,
Best,
Hannes
