Unable to create epics and stories

I just created a new scrum board and I'm having issues with creating epics and stories under the new project.

What's odd is that I'm able to follow the standard flow and create an epic but it defaults to another project in Jira and I'm unable to select the new project that I just created. Here's a screenshot 

On top of this, I'm unable to create normal stories in the backlog as well. My guess is that these are related. I've tried changing settings but have been unable to find a solution. Here's a screenshot of that as well:

Have you checked the project permissions on the new project?  You need to have Create Issues permissions to see the new project in the drop-down on the create screen.
