I've searched the site and have seen this brought up since 2011. However, none of the answers apply.
I am testing Jira v8.0.0 and while I am able to change the Project Lead, there doesn't appear to be any way to change the Default Assignee. The screen shot below indicates I should be able to update it, but it cannot be edited.
Is there a secret sign-in / handshake / bribe needed that I don't know?

Can you check if the (Allow unassigned issues) is set to ON (you can do it via Administration - System - General Configuration)
@Nour Durra Consultant It is set to OFF, but that is what I expect; all issues must be assigned We just want someone other than the Project Lead to be the Default Assignee.

yeah, in that area, there are ONLY two options for all (Project Lead, and Unassigned)

I still don't see the answer. HOW DO YOU CHANGE A DEFAULT ASSIGNEE TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN PROJECT LEAD OR UNASSIGNED?????
