Using new "Action Items" Feature in automation for creating a ticket and adding a description

Konstantin Siegert December 4, 2024

Hey everyone,

first of all: The Action Items feature is great :) Using "[] XX" create a quick and easy to use checklist inside of my tickets descriptions :)
PS: Referring to "Introducing Action Items"

I wanted to make use of this new feature in my automation rules, as I used tables beforehand and checklist are giving a better overview to the description of my tickets :)

So for my testing I tried (just focus on the [] or "/" part):

For "{{sprint.name}}" content needs to be maintained for the following tickets: ||Ticket||Description||
{{#lookupIssues}} |{{url}}||
{{/}}

[] DE
[] AT
/ DE
/ AT

Unfortunately the format doesn't seem to be applied correctly via the automation rule:

Expected:

So my question is as simple as: Is there any way to use the new jira action items in automation rules, so that their format is applied as a checklist item?

Thanks and BR

Hi @Konstantin Siegert

this has been discussed beneath your linked introduction.
I guess you will need to set these tasks via the advanced edit.

Hello @Konstantin Siegert

As per the documentation, the Action Items feature is available on for the Description and Comment fields.

I think it will not work for these fields in an Automation Rule because in an Automation rule you are inserting plain text while through the UI you are working with a wiki markup interpreter.

You can use wiki markup code in the Automation Rule, but there does not appear to be any code to indicate a checkbox.

Hi @Konstantin Siegert ,

At the moment, Action Items, do not seem to work with Automation. This is a good case for using Checklist for Jira. You can see a full feature comparison table here.

Automations and advanced capabilities are not supported with Jira action items. To clarify the distinction, my team at Seibert Group have compiled a detailed comparison between Jira action items (as it is today) and comprehensive checklists.
