I am trying to make it so that one user group can see BOTH task and subtask then another user group can see ONLY parent task.

So far I have tried making SubTaskUser custom field but now get this error message when creating test tickets:

"SubtaskUser: User 'XYZ' is not valid for this user picker."

Another issue is that users in group that should be excluded can still see and access subtasks.

You can't do this in full, as there are two layers of permission to view an issue which simply don't support it.

  • Layer 1 is project permissions, where you can either see all issues in a project, or you can not.
  • Layer 2 is issue security, where you can hide individual issues by setting a field.  But sub-tasks take the security level of their parents.  So you can either see the issue and all its sub-tasks, or you can't see any of it.

Partial visibility is not possible, and it's probably not a good thing to implement anyway.  If I can only see part of a story, I'm misinformed, which is bad practice.

However, if it's just for reporting and day-to-day work where people often only want to focus on one part of something, @Ryan Fish has the right answer - filter for what you want to see where you need to!

@Anna McKay

From the team board, create a quick filter for users to select and filter what the see on the board.

  1. Select board (top right)/ configure/ quick filter
  2. Enter a name, JQL query ("issuetype = sub-task" for sub-task only view), description.
  3. Select Add
  4. The quick filter will appear near the top of the board

Enjoy!
