Most likely you have some next-gen projects in your Jira site.
Whenever you create a next-gen project, it comes with its own set of statuses, so this explains the duplicates.

JIRA also allows 'duplicate' custom field names and other things. You need to understand how things work 'under the covers'. All statuses, fields, etc. are given IDs and that is the primary key in the database. To JIRA you don't have duplicates because it keeps track of the IDs. The name is simply a tag associated with the ID.

Your explanation is ok. But i believe that this answer is not 100 % correct.
You can not create a status if the name already exists, so having more then 1 status with the same name should be impossible.
I can be wrong here, but i think there is something wrong here.
