We have a lot of old labels being used in old projects. I'm wondering what happens to these labels when a project is archived. thx

Hi @Jill Vieregge ,

Jira labels are a global entity. Once created then can be used anywhere in the entire Jira instance. Archiving a Jira project only hides the project and its issues and corresponding fields values appearing under JQL search on issue navigator. The labels will still exist and will be available for users to search and choose.

You can refer below thread to know how to best deal with labels:

Kind Regards

Hi Jill,

Jira as of now still suggests label from archived project. We requested this improvement https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-84144 Please upvote that ticket.

One workaround is to un-archive the projects, delete those labels, and archive the project again. If you have tons of labels, check out our app to easily delete and manage these old labels:

Advanced Label Manager for Jira
