I would like to know about differences between JIRA Data Center versus JIRA Server with RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). What are the main benefits of JIRA Data Center compared to JIRA Servers with RAID?

Hi!

RAID only gives you redundancy for the Disks on a single Server. Disks are only one potential Issue a single server can face. Think things like .. Power-supply failure, Fans, Motherboard, CPU etc ...

With Data-Center you can run your Jira on multiple servers at the same time, usually fronted by a load balancer. So a failure of a single server (called node) will not bring down your Jira Instance.

Thanks Christian for your prompt reply.  Now I understood that RAID gives redundancy only for disks while Data-Center helps to recover from other hardware failure.

What is your view about performance differences between JIRA Data Center vs JIRA Servers with RAID?

Actually we are already using JIRA Server and there will be growth in term of JIRA usage. This should not create any future performance issue. We also would like to have resiliency. Is it necessary to purchase JIRA Data Server license for this? Isn't it possible to get high performance with resiliency by server clustering or something else? Please suggest.

To put it simply: If you need redundancy or faster disc perfomance RAID can help you for sure. But it has no direct impact on Jira itself. Jira does not really "care" if you run your server with a single disc or RAID. ;)

If you want to cluster Jira on multiple nodes you would need to acquire a data center license. Only with a Jira Data Center clustering will be possible.
