What is the importance of "Days in column" metrics in the JIRA board for a project?

I see that "Days in column" shows the numbers of days an issue has spent in a particular column, I want to understand further how is this metrics useful. What deeper insights can we get from using this metrics?

Welcome to the community!

One idea for agile teams is improving the flow of work, from start to delivery.  So, it can help to make visible how long work spends in various steps.  Seeing this info can lead teams to discuss "why" work is in a step for a while:

• Is it blocked
• Is it bigger/more complex than normal
• Does someone need help (and isn't asking for it)
• Etc.

The visibility leads to inspection, discussion, and potentially improvement.
