What to do when someone else already has the site name?

I wish to use a particular site name for .atlassian.net to use in JIRA cloud. I have already cast around and found that no one else in my company has reserved this name. It is probably some external party has reserved the word.

Appreciate your suggestions on what to do now ...

There's not too much you can do. Its possible someone in your company used it for a trial so I would contact Atlassian and see what they say. If it wasn't used for just a trial and then expired someone is actively paying for it and at that point there's nothing you or Atlassian can do unless there is a possible trademark or copyright violation happening.
