When did Task Stop Being Able to Be Used to Connect to a Story?

I'm an avid user of Jira Software. A few years ago, Task was able to be connected to a Story. When did this change?

You can still link tasks and stories, you do that by using the Link work item feature.

Let me offer further clarification, on the hierarchy, Task was below Story, when did this change?

Task and story has always been on the same level in the default hierarchy unless you used a custom hierarchy were story was on the sam level as epic.
