Which template to use for timeline-planning?

Bernadett Sándor June 12, 2025

Hi,

We are a team of 8 and would like to track our yearly "epic and sub"tasks, reviews, forecasting schedules. There are 3 groups to assign tasks for. There is no need for special SCRUM or Kanban stye. Tasks, milestones, groups, start/end, deadline and parent/child connection are the mostly used.

My question: which template would you recommend (please also hint in which group e.g. sales, product mgmt, task tracking) because I have already started in Scrum but it is not what I really need - much complex for my needs.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Bernadett - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I recommend you set up a simple Kanban project based on the "blank project" template for Software projects. Don't let the software name fool you - it's the best and most customizable project type. Be sure you create a Company-managed project and not a Team-managed project.

If it is truly a business type team, then just create a work management/business project - again, be sure it is a Company-managed and NOT Team-managed project. You have to click on the Show more link when in the process of giving the project a name.

Dear John,

I appreciate your detailed answer. Yes, the names have misled me so I got lost what would be the best template. Many choices - many lessons to learn.

Hello @Bernadett Sándor and welcome to the Atlssian Community! :)

Personally, I like Kanban more. For task tracking, it's pretty easy. You have a few columns, like "TO DO", "IN PROGRESS", "DONE", so it gives full visibility, especially if the project you manage isn't big. Moreover, it's always possible to customize it to your needs y adding extra columns.

Thank you for the hint. It seems KANBAN with customization would fit us. I try it.

Hi @Bernadett Sándor   ☺️, If you're open to using a third-party app using board templates might be a good option to make your life even easier.

  • You can easily safe your preferred board configurations as a template and then create them in your project on demand

You can find us at the Atlassian Marketplace ➡️ https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1224664

This is how this can look like:

  • Select your board template und create board in project
