Why can't I access Confluence and JIRA Software at the same time?

We recently upgraded to JIRA Software from Core and also installed Confluence, which we have linked together and are hosted on our own servers. However, it seems that I can't be logged into both applications in the same browser at the same time. When I login to one of them, I'm logged out of the other. Why is this?

We haven't configured the LDAP or mail server on Confluence yet so I'm not sure if that's a factor or not.
