If I made a search, and save it, I can't modify it later because the JQL text box is not available on n the search screen.

if you are selecting your filter, then on the right of the blue search box there should be a switch to jql. Click that to switch to jql and update your query and then save (or save as)

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

How are you getting to the saved filter?

I mean, are you clicking on filters -> <your filter>?  If so, is it then running the filter and giving current results ok?  What are you getting above the results?  Can we have a screenshot (feel free to obscure real data, we're only interested in the broad display of the header)
