Why did user stories I moved from a Sprint get deleted when I deleted the old Sprint?

Doug Oxford August 17, 2018

I needed to cancel a currently active Sprint so I:

1) Created a new Sprint. "Sprint 34"
2) Moved all items from the active Sprint ("Sprint 32") to this new Sprint ("Sprint 34").
3) Deleted Sprint 32
Result:
1) Sprint 32 was deleted, as expected.
2) User Stories in Sprint 34 disappeared. Huh???

Where did they go? And, how can I find them? I have tried using the 'Search' facility, but it cannot locate the user stories.

User stories should not be deleted when the sprint is deleted/ How did you search? Can you search using the new Sprint name?

If that doesn't work, maybe you can try hitting the issue urls directly and see if they are still there.

Also, it is worth checking if your permissions are changed.

The new Sprint exists and is visible in the backlog, but the User Stories are not displayed.

I have tried using the 'Backlog' search textbox for the Issue Key as well as some text I know was part of the issue name. Both attempts could not locate the missing User Stories.

I tried putting the issue id WAS-1205 as the selectedIssue argument on the address bar in my browser, but it came up empty; the Backlog was displayed, but no issues were selected.

As far as permissions, what permissions should I look for?

Thank you.

I found out the problem.

User stories marked as 'Done' in a Sprint that is not active do not show up in the list of issues in the Backlog.

I found the user stories by going into the 'Browse' page and looking at the 'Done issues' filter.

I have updated the User Stories to be in the 'Review/Test' Status and they appear in the Sprint again.

I do not know why a User Story marked as 'Done' would not display in the 'Sprint' in the backlog, but at least I know this now and have resolved the problem. And, yeah, the Stories did not get deleted.

Thank you.

Glad to know you were able to figure out the issue. Couple of quick notes:

  1. A story in a sprint is "done" only when it reaches the last column of the board.
  2. Make sure the workflow statuses are mapped to the appropriate columns in the board. If the status is not mapped, they won't appear in the "Active sprints" view.
