Why have the assignee images disappeared and now show as default icon?

Recently the images the team have added to their user profile have all disappeared and I can only now see a default grey and white icon, which is becoming more frustrating as you now need to hover over each to see which is each team member.

Why has this happened? How can I get them back?

In this situation I would advise you get in touch with Atlassian as it seems a rendering issue, https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/

Prior contacting them I would recommend you try to access your Jira instance with different browser in case this behaviour is caused by it. Is this happening to all your users?
