Why would the Software Simplified Workflow suddenly have different statuses?

My Simplified Workflow, which was always the default To Do, In Progress, Done, suddenly is 'In Progress', Active, In Active.  And the buttons, called 'To Do', 'In Progress', Done, are now transitioning to statuses that I did not set them for.  The have been no new versions of the workflow published.  Any idea why this would happen?  using Cloud version, no boards.

The community likes to learn and accumulate knowledge, rather than delete.

There's probably several people who are having, or will have the same problem, so a quick description of what it was would be very welcome!

good point, so another admin renamed the Statuses.
