Within Issues Field Automation, how to use "Parent" to replace "Epic Link"?

Jones_ David October 30, 2024

Hi, I'm using Jira Cloud and trying to set an automation that for emails created a certain way, the epic is automatically set. When I use "Epic Link" this is easy, the option set is the epics and it's no problem.

But there is a warning that Epic Link is going to be replaced with "Parent" - however when I select that field, the options are nonsensical to me. The drop down only lists "Current issue" and "Trigger issue" - typing in the epic name or ID doesn't seem to retrieve anything.

Can someone explain how to use this?

Hi @Jones_ David -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

For a question like this, please post an image of your complete automation rule, images of any relevant actions / conditions / branches, an image of the audit log details showing the rule execution, and explain what is not working as expected. Those will provide context for the community to offer ideas. Thanks!

Until we see those...

With the sunsetting of the Epic Link field, the parent field can be used in most places in rules.  However everything has not been updated in the UX yet.  Also, parent is used for the relationship between issues and sub-tasks.

Together those things mean some changes may be required for rules replacing the Epic Link field; seeing the specifics of your rule will help the community offer suggestions.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi @Jones_ David

Can you give us more details about your automation rule. The parent field you wanted to use in a condition, in a create/update of a ticket or in a branch?
