I'm making an overview for management to discuss workload accross departments. So it's quite high level, not needing sub tasks nor having colleagues working in Jira specifically.
For now I've used the scrum template with sprints and tasks, using the story points, giving each task a label of the involved department and story points for the amount of time spent on it.
Eg: 'sprint' = Event X
-> task: event communication (communications department)
-> task: invoices (accounting department), etc.
Is there any better way to go about this?

If you are open to 3rd party apps and you would like to have visualization of it, then you can use the app I have developed - Multi-team Scrum Metrics & Retrospective. Using custom JQL filters, you can get this view:

@Liesbeth K. Welcome to the Atlassian community
I would suggest using plans. Here is some information on how to effectively do that.
