You are absolutely correct, the backlog should be used to triage work items. I have also heard many teams that express this same interest of suppressing xray tests and even test sets from the backlog.
It is very simple to make this change. The list of items that appear in the backlog are actually based on your Board Settings in Jira. Looking at either your backlog in Jira or your Board/Active Sprint, in the top right corner you will see a button with three ellipses, click here and click on Board Settings, then General.
Notice the Saved Filter and Filter Query for your board. This filter is what controls which issue types appear in the board, and consequently in the backlog as well. You can modify this filter to exclude xray tests, or anything else you wish, using JQL.
