Jira and confluence connection compatibility depends upon version of Application Links (Atlassian library for connecting applications) bundled with them.

Jira 8.8.1 comes with Application Link version - 6.0.4,

Confluence 7.11 & 7.12 comes with Application Link Version - 7.2.3 and 7.2.7 respectively.

More here - https://confluence.atlassian.com/applinks/application-links-version-matrix-779174762.html

Now as per above document there is no know incompatibility between these two versions of Jira and Confluence.

But Atlassian suggest using versions of applications where bundled Application Link library have same major version number.
