how does Jira assign the letter code to the ticket numbering?

I'm often asked by business users how Jira assigns the letters to the ticket numbering, and to be honest I've never really bothered finding out

But does anyone know?

Is it when the Admin sets up the project and they have to add a couple of letters to an auto population field

or does Jira pick a random 4 letters from the project title?

Yes when you create a project, you can either go with the suggested project key or type a specific one in.
