We have one Product and several extensions to that product. Some times these extensions are released independently and hence need to be associated with their own versions. I was thinking if we could add several products with their own versioning tree. Is it possible?
How do i add a new product to existing project.
Welcome to the Atlassian Community.
With Jira you will find that there are often several ways of achieving similar results and your request is most definitely one of these cases. I list below a couple of choices for you to consider as each has advantages/disadvantages. I see that you are using Jira Software so I will focus on the options available to you there.
1. The simplest option is to just use a naming convention for your releases that identify the version of the extension so you could have something like....
Product V1.0
Product V1.1
ExtensionA V1.0
ExtensionA V1.1
ExtensionB V1.1
...
The advantage of this is any individual issue can be attached to both product and extension versions.
2. An alternative is to give each extension its own Project and then you can have completely distinct versions for each of the main product line and each extension. You can then build an Agile Board based on a filter rather than the default project to bring the management of both Product and extensions together if that is required.
3. Another option if you are not already using Components is for the Product/Extension to be stored in the Component field and then you can use the combination of Component/Version
to identify what the issue is associated with.
I have scratched the surface here with 3 different options that use the inbuilt functionality. But of course there are other options that may be more suitable for you and one of the major benefits of using Jira is of course all the marketplace Apps that give you even more options. Examples include
https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211825/configuration-management-toolkit
https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/34717/structure-project-management-at-scale
Good luck with solving your problem I am sure there is a solution out there that will match all or at least most of your requirements.
