importing issues into jira cloud using csv won't recognize assignee or reporter names

on the Cloud I'm using the "Import issues from CSV" option in the search window(in same pulldown as Bulk change), but I'm having trouble trying to get it to recognize the assignee and reporter fields. I'm using the mapping option but no matter what i enter as a username(fred smith, fred.smith@abc.com) it keeps coming up with errors during import saying the user does not exist, even though fred smith does have an account. Is this due to the new username obfuscation that atlassian recently introduced? What form of username to I need to map to to get the import to accept and save the user fields?

Thanks,

Jay
