Hi James - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Got to Settings > User Management. Then click on Groups on the left side menu.

Search for the org-admins group. Add the user to that group.

@John Funk

Do you have a screen image of that group? I don't see it in my Free subscription.

Maybe that is an option available only in paid subscriptions (like the post author indicates they have).

Yes, I think it is only available in Paid subscriptions because there is no Permission controls per se for Free subscriptions. Whoever creates the Free site becomes the Org Admin by default.

Actually I think the difference would be based on how user management is handled.

In a Free site, like mine, other users can be made Organization Admins by drilling into the user account details and assigning them the org admin role.

And there is no org-admin group listed in my Free site. My Organization is, I believe, under Centralized User Management, and the above is what is shown in the documentation for Centralized User Management.

In the documentation that shows the above for Centralized User Management, in the section for Original User Management the instructions say:

To give someone an organization admin role:

  1. Log in to your organization at admin.atlassian.com.

  2. Choose Settings > Administrators.

  3. Click Add administrators.

  4. Enter an Atlassian account email address and click Grant access.

I have never encountered that last option before. Hoping they will combine all of this into a single setup one day.  :-(

Hello James,

Welcome to Community :)

I see that you are the org admin of the instance you wish to make someone the org. Are you facing any issues or errors while making someone the org ?

for your instance the steps shared by Trudy, John and shalini should work

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. Select Directory > Users.

  3. Select a user.

  4. Select more actions (•••).

  5. Select Assign org admin role.

Thank You,

Prachi

Yes, these are the steps according to the documentation. But the end result is that step 6 adds the User to the org-admins group.
