my final goal is to include a post function in the workflow transactions so that when it goes to the "In Progress" status, fill that date field with the current date.
@Swaroop You would need to us an app like ScriptRunner or JSU to accomplish this. I am positive it can be done using ScriptRunner and think it can be done using JSU. There might be other apps as well that could do this.
