Hello everyone,
I'm trying to track the time required for a task that involves multiple people. However, in Jira I can assign only one assignee per task.
Is there a way to track contributions or time spent by more than one person on the same task?
I'm new to this area, are there any courses or resources you would recommend for learning how to monitor and manage team activities effectively?
Thanks for your help!
Hi @Nicola Biagi 👋
Welcome to the Community
You're right: Jira allows only one assignee per task, but that doesn’t mean you can’t track contributions from multiple team members. And more importantly, if your goal is to manage team activities effectively, tracking who worked on what, for how long, and where the bottlenecks are — becomes key.
How you can manage this effectively:
Each contributor (even if not the assignee) can log time on the issue. This gives you visibility into individual effort — but it depends on the team being diligent about logging.
If you want to manage team activity without relying solely on manual logs, Time in Status can help by showing:
How long a task was assigned to each team member
Time spent in statuses like "In Progress", "Blocked", etc.
Status transitions and cycle time, filtered by assignee or role
This app is great for exactly what you're looking for — it gives a detailed breakdown of how long each issue spent in each status, including multiple entries into the same status.
With Time In Status , you can:
View all status transitions (with timestamps)
See how many times the issue entered a status like “Input Required”
Track time spent per status and visualize the flow
Export the data to Excel or share as a dashboard gadget
Also app gives you access to Sprint Performance Report. This report contains various metrics for each sprint, including Team Velocity.
This is especially useful when:
Multiple team members contribute over time
You want visibility and accountability without burdening the team with manual input
You need metrics for planning, retrospectives, or workload balancing

Hi, @Nicola Biagi welcome to the community!
If you are down to try the plugin that can cover problems with time tracking, I recommend ActivityTimeline. This app provides a special planning board that contains all Jira projects with tasks, teams, and timelines and is built like a calendar. Users can assign tasks directly on the dashboard by simple drag-n-drop, track user activities, and understand who is doing what and when it will be done. You can split the tasks between multiple users and track their contribution to the work separately. Our team recorded a short video to show how easy it is: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wcFAebhJqBdlktFH5QJNXnSqoBwXVtSP/view?usp=drive_link
Please let me know if you have some specific questions, or book a free demo session with our customer success manager. (Note: I work for this vendor).

Hello @Nicola Biagi
Welcome to the community
I understand you're looking to track how multiple people contribute to a single Jira task a common need when issues are handed off between teammates, but Jira allows only one assignee per issue at a time.
To solve this, I’d recommend using a third-party app, as Jira doesn’t offer a built-in feature to measure how much time each user contributed to the same task.
My recommendation is Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira, the oldest and leading Time in Status app in the Atlassian Marketplace, built by my team at OBSS. It supports both Jira Cloud and Data Center.
Timepiece mainly allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status, assignee, group, or team, calculated directly from Jira issue history (no workflow changes needed).
Assignee Duration per Status – Shows how much time each assignee spent on each status within an issue. Perfect for tracking shared tasks where multiple team members took ownership at different stages.
Group Duration per Status – If your users are grouped into teams or roles, this report shows how long each group worked on each status.
Additionally, you can calculate averages and totals, grouped by any issue field (assignee, project, sprint, etc.) and visualize the results in charts and data tables.
Visit Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira to explore how our JIRA add-on can revolutionize your metrics measurement process. And also if you have a question feel free to ask anything.
Hope it helps,
Ayça

Hi @Nicola Biagi Welcome to the community!
Basically to display such information you do not need any 3rd party marketplace apps. You can see it under the Work log tab from the Jira work item perspective. It is possible to log the time into the Jira work item even by users who are not assignees or reporters of the ticket.
Below I have added a screenshot of what it looks like when more than one user has logged time in the same Jira work item.
If such a view is not enough for you and you want, for example, to view work logs for more than one Jira work item without jumping between windows, then it is worth considering a 3rd party marketplace app.
As a vendor, we also had a need to facilitate the login process and the display of logged time in Jira, and so we created Worklogs - Time Tracking and Time Reports.
The app presents the time recorded by users in various projects in the form of a clear table and allows direct logging of time in the app.
There are many options to filter the data, you can export time logs and much more.
If you have any questions regarding time tracking or our app, feel free to contact us or schedule a meeting. We're happy to help.

Hi, @Nicola Biagi! 👋
In Jira, any user can log time on a task, even if they're not the assignee — but the native activity tab just shows a flat list of logs, which makes it hard to see individual contributions clearly.
If you want better visibility, JetTime for Jira app gives you a clean breakdown of work logs by person right inside the issue panel.

Time can be tracked by anyone whether they are the assignee or not.
If you go to the Activity section at the bottom of the task and click on Work Log you or anyone should be able to log work against the task.
For this to work, Time Tracking needs to be turned on (which can be set up by a Jira admin), and people need to have the Work on Issues permission (which can be set up by a Project or Jira admin)
