I have JIRA 5.2 and Confluence 4.0.3. What is the highest java version compatible with this combination.

I guess it's Java 6. If you really need to be sure, you can extract from class file: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1096148/how-to-check-the-jdk-version-used-to-compile-a-class-file

See https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA052/Supported+Platforms

Annoyingly, there's no equivalent for Confluence.

(I'm bound to point out both of those are thoroughly out of support and you should really upgrade)
