Remove an Issue Type from a Workflow

christopher_branaman April 14, 2025

Jira Cloud > Company Managed

I have a Workflow that is being shared by 3 projects. The currently workflow in place does not apply to Sub-Tasks, but I cannot figure out how to remove the Sub-Task issue type from the workflow.

If I view the main screen, it lists all issue types (including sub-tasks). I click in and then click "assign" and chose only Stories and Bugs, but it still says "All unassigned issue types" at the top.

When I hit save/publish nothing changes and the workflow is still being enforced on Sub-Tasks.

Hi Christopher,

You need to click on the Add workflow button and add the workflow you want to use for Sub-tasks to the current scheme. Just select the workflow and then follow the prompts including selecting the Sub-task issue type after a few steps. This will assign the Sub-task to the new workflow. Then be sure to publish the workflow.

Adding to this...

The "All unassigned issue types" is always present in a Workflow Scheme. It ensures that there is some workflow used for every issue type that might appear within the project where that issue type has not been explicitly associated to another workflow.

Otherwise a new issue type might be added to the project, but would be unusable because Jira would not know what workflow to use for it.
