Renaming Jira Classic Board Columns

UliAbo

Hello everyone,

I'm quite familar with the next gen version of Jira. But when using the classic version I can't find the option to rename a column of the Jira Board as an admin? I can see the default columns "To Do", "Draft", "In Review", etc.

I'm using a free plan. Can I nevertheless rename then? How, what do I miss?

Thanks for help,
Uli

Hey @UliAbo ,

Before answer your question to rename board columns you will need to understand what project type you are using.

See the type column in your project listing to figure out what project type you are using.

Screenshot from 2020-07-25 19-59-14.pngThis behavior is the same for free and paid plans.

Business project - This project will use your workflow statuses as columns and the only way to rename the columns are renaming the statuses names. The issue with this action is that this change is global and will impact all others workflows that uses this statuses and will potentially break your existing JQL filters.

Software project - This type of project allow you to rename the columns and map multiple statuses to the same column.

Take a look in both documentation and you will understand more about their differences.
