Required comment field in transition status

How do I set up SD to have an automatic comment field pop up when changing the status of a ticket

You could add a "Comment Required Validator" into that transition of the corresponding workflow and add an empty screen - so only Comment field is on that screen - to that transition. In order to do so you would need the JIRA Misc Workflow Extension Plugin activated.
