Restore XML Backup from Jira 7.4 to Jira 7.13

Bertrand Delaitre September 20, 2021

Hi,

We need to restore a XML Backup made from a Jira 7.4 database to a Jira 7.13.8 version. Is it possible? What are the limitations?

Thanks

Hello @Bertrand Delaitre

From my point of view I've recommend you to restore 7.4 to a server 7.4 and update server later on.

Can be possible?

Best regards.

Nope. Not possible if I've correctly understood our technical team. In fact, we need to restore an old version of our database and it seems difficult to install a new Jira 7.4 in our infrastructure.

But thanks for answer

Hello @Bertrand Delaitre

I'm facing off all the days with IT systems...at the end, instead of speak or request them to do this type of things, I've finally doing my self but this part normally is responsability of IT systems.

So, some questions should be undertanding.

First and more important, depens on the size of your Jira database restoring with XML will fails (always fail) and you will need to modify a lot of entries in database.

Do you know how to solve entries in database? Are your "Technician team" ready to modify entries in database?

If your "Technician team" is not going to solve entries in database, forget to restart XML.

The main way to restore database is restoring directly from database server, if you are using PostGre, exporting and importing.

So, you can do the following, create a new database in database server, export database old (7.4) and import in the server. If works (I don't know now if database server for 7.4 is compatible with 7.18, you should check pre-requisites for installing 7.13.8 first).

If works...stop Jira and change server.xml and "test" (I've recommend to create a backup of previous one and rename)

This is not impacting your Jira because if fails you can set again the previous server.xml and the system works again.

You and your "Technician team" should work very closely if you don't have enough knowledge for this part. If you and your "Techician team" are nor ready for this, this attempt to upgrade will failed.

Good luck.

Best regards!

Thanks for your answer. I think we still have a backup of the Oracle DB. So we will try your solution.
