Restrict project access to reporters user group only

I am new to JIRA, especially the permissions so I'm hoping someone out there can spell this out for me.

I have multiple clients using a single project. I want to limit their access to the project so that they can create issues, track their own issues progress and make limited edits.

I'm not getting anywhere with it so far. How can I give my clients this limited access?
