Restrict transition if value is missing in custom field

Frida Gustafsson June 18, 2024

We want to create a rule or automation to restrict transition if a custom field (checkbox) is empty.

I can't find anything in the automation rule builder for restrictions:

And I can't figure out the transition rule (in workflow mode):

Any ideas?

Hi @Frida Gustafsson

I believe it would much simpler to use transition validator. If you are in a company-managed project then there is the Field Required Validator, which will prevent the transition if a field is empty.

Cheers

Hi @Maciej Dudziak _Forgappify_

Please, could you tell me how can I use transition validator? I want to restrict transition if a item is flagged (or, flag custom field is not empty).

Hi @Marcelo Viana de Siqueiraare you on cloud or server?

If you are on cloud, follow the steps:

  1. Edit the workflow that contains the transition.
  2. In diagram mode, select the transition arrow and click Validators in the properties panel. Or in text mode, select the transition's name from the Transitions (id) column.
  3. Select the Validators tab and click on Add validator button
  4. Choose from the available validators and set any necessary parameters for the validator.
  5. Remember to Publish Draft

On cloud, it is possible to use Flagged field in Field Required Validator

I'm sorry, that's not within my area of expertise to assist with. You should probably ask a new question and tag it with the server deployment type, because this question is about the cloud.

Hi @Maciej Dudziak _Forgappify_

Thank you! We are in a team-managed project (we have our reasons :D) - I forgot to mention that in my initial post..

I think that in the "Restrict to when a field is a specific value" rule, when you change "Review its value as" to Text and leave "This value" empty, then it should work.
