Rich Text Default Value for Custom Field

I'm so confused why Jira makes this so difficult. How can I add some default bolded text and bullet points in a custom field that I've made? 

1. I've created a custom field ("Reproduction Steps") as a paragraph/rich text field

2.  When attempting to edit the default value the only data I'm allowed to enter is plain text.

3. I've checked the renderer (set as Wiki Style)

4. OK, so I use wiki style markup to modify the way the default items should show up and it doesn't work.

For bold text you need to use double star. 

So you would "**"bold"**" , it's important to know you have to complete it sequentially i.e ** then the words you want bold followed by **

You can do the same for italic using single stars.
