We have a use case when customer refused to use epics to group issues, instead we created standard issue type: (note: non technical business stakeholders)
1. All tickets in the project need to be linked to one of the parent tickets
2. We created scripted custom field (lets say: umbrella) to provide drop down with available subset of parent issues. So when selection is made we have umbrella issue link displayed.
